Program Description

Event Details

Charles Bethea from the Chicago History Museum will discuss Juneteenth, our country’s second independence day. Although it has long been celebrated in the African American community, this monumental event remains unknown to many Americans. On June 19, 1865, over two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with news of freedom for the 250,000 people still enslaved there.
